The 59-year-old Mexican Aguirre, who played for his country at the 1986 World Cup and coached them in 2010, has signed a four-year contract that will earn him a monthly salary of $120,000, the EFA said.

Cuper, who had been expected to sign a new deal with Egypt after securing their first appearance at the World Cup finals in 28 years, was not offered the chance to stay on after a disappointing tournament in Russia, where they lost all three of their Group A matches.

Aguirre previously coached the Japanese national team and Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Espanyol.

His first assignment with Egypt will be to qualify for next year’s African Nations Cup finals. Their next qualifier is at home to Niger next month.
