Sydney paddler Jessica Fox qualified fastest among the heat winners on the opening day of the World Canoe Slalom Championships in Prague.

Despite attracting a two-second penalty Fox set the fastest time and retains favouritism for the C1, an event she's dominated this year.

Fellow Australian Ros Lawrence finished fourth in the first heat with three 2-second penalties.

West Australian Rob Jeffery cruised through to the semi-finals of the men's C1, while there was also good news in the men's K1.

All three Australian starters made it through to the semis with Lucien Delfour 6th fastest, Jaxon Merritt 20th and Will Forsythe 29th.

Delfour has enjoyed a strong European summer, which included a World Cup silver in Spain, while Forsythe has spent most of the season recovering from surgery.
