Jetstar to end pre-ticked booking extras

Budget airline Jetstar will remove the automatic selection of extras on its online booking forms after talks with the ACCC.

Jetstar will stop automatically adding extras such as travel insurance to its customers' online bookings, as Australia's consumer watchdog looks to prevent travellers from paying unnecessary costs.

As of July next year, the budget carrier will no longer pre-select checked baggage, travel insurance, seat selection and charity donations on its online forms.

It made the changes after talks with the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission, which raised concerns people were accidentally paying for things they didn't need.

Jetstar will join Qantas as Australian airlines without any pre-ticked options.

Virgin Australia on Thursday said it would remove pre-select travel insurance from its forms, while Tigerair also announced on Friday it would immediately drop pre-select insurance and checked baggage.

"The ACCC will continue to engage with the remaining domestic airlines that still pre-select extras, and urge them to follow suit," chairman Rod Sims said.

Mr Sims says the ACCC will also try and stop international airlines operating in Australia from automatically ticking boxes for customers.

Consumer group Choice has welcomed the changes but called on Jetstar to get rid of pre-selection immediately.

"Jetstar is the worst offender when it comes to tricking consumers into paying for things they don't need when booking flights, we think they should ditch the ticks straight away," Choice spokesman Tom Godfrey said.

A Choice investigation found pre-selected extras could increase the price of a flight by up to 40 per cent.
