A US jeweller had a nasty shock when he watched a $20,000 (almost A$22,000) diamond go missing - into his dog's digestive system.

George Kaufmann and his business partner were meeting a diamond dealer in their store, when they accidentally dropped a 3-carat diamond on the floor.

Quick as a flash, the dog gobbled it up. Upon asking a vet what they ought to do, the men were informed they needed to wait until nature took its course.

"When we took a walk in the morning and evening I collected and went through everything. It wasn't glamorous, but you gotta do what you gotta do," Kaufmann said.

Kaufmann then cleaned up the rock and handed it back to the diamond dealer.
