Adrian Ernest Bayley will appeal against his life sentence for the rape and murder of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher.
Bayley, 41, was last month sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 35 years for the rape and murder of Ms Meagher in Brunswick last September.
He admitted to raping and killing the 29-year-old ABC employee in a laneway just 500 metres from her home, before burying her body at Gisborne South, north of Melbourne.
Victorian Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Nettle jailed Bayley for life for the murder plus 15 years for the rape.
Bayley's lawyers lodged an appeal against the sentence on Wednesday.
In sentencing Bayley, Justice Nettle said the murder ranked among the worst committed in Victoria.
"The rape was savage and degrading.
"Your killing of the deceased ranks among the worst kind conceivable."
Justice Nettle said Bayley's crime was made even worse given he tried to hide Ms Meagher's body and he was on parole for prior rape convictions when he committed the offence.
"The nature and gravity of your offending and your antecedents are such that nothing short of life imprisonment will suffice," he said.
During Bayley's pre-sentence hearing, the prosecution argued that Bayley should be jailed for life with no chance of parole.
Bayley's lawyer Saul Holt SC accepted that Bayley deserved a life sentence, but said he should eventually be given a chance to receive parole.
"This is not offending that, even taken in combination with Mr Bayley's prior convictions ... should mean that the key gets thrown away forever," Mr Holt said.
Justice Nettle said he would have jailed Bayley for life with no parole if he hadn't pleaded guilty.
Bayley will be eligible for parole at age 76.
After the sentence was handed down, Ms Meagher's husband Tom Meagher described Bayley as "unrepentantly evil".
Victorian Legal Aid, which represent Bayley, declined to comment on Thursday.
