As US President Donald Trump travels around Europe to strengthen foreign relations with the UK and Russia, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel used the opportunity to see how well Americans grasped basic geography.

The comedian took to the streets with a world map and asked Americans to name just one country.

"It’s imperative that America has strong relationships with and knowledge about people in other lands," he said on his titular talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live.

"That responsibility extends to all of us, not just the president. So we came up with a test. The test is very simple. We went out on the street and asked people who were passing by to name a country on a map. That’s it."

Handed a pointer and asked to name any country, the results weren't convincing.

While some participants were able to identify the continents of Africa and Asia, many were unable to identify a single country.

Fortunately, one young boy saved the day and showed off his geographical knowledge of the world.
