An ANZ survey shows the number of job ads placed in newspapers and on the internet surged by almost 20 per cent in February, reversing a fall of eight per cent in January.

The total number of job advertisements placed in major metropolitan newspapers and on the internet was up 19.1 per cent at 159,778.

Newspaper ads grew by 13.1 per cent and internet ads surged 19.6 per cent.

The survey shows February's job advertisements are now just 2.3 per cent lower than the same month a year earlier, after being 26 per cent lower in January.

ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan says growth in February suggested January's decline is probably a seasonal anomaly.
