Job seeker wait period among welfare bills

The federal government has introduced a swag of social services legislation, including measures targeted at young job seekers.

Job seekers would have to wait one month before getting the dole under new rules included in a swag of social services legislation reintroduced to parliament by the federal government.

Social Services Minister Christian Porter on Thursday tabled three bills to rein-in welfare spending after the July 2 federal election stalled their progress in the previous parliament.

The job-seeker measures aim to reduce youth unemployment, which is twice as high as the overall unemployment rate.

More than 100,000 young Australians have never worked before, he said.

"Once a young person becomes long-term unemployed their chances of successfully finding employment declines drastically," Mr Porter told parliament.

The government also wants to phase out family tax benefit supplements and reduce yearly payments from $2832 to $1000 for single parents of kids aged 13 to 16.

Grandparents, great-grandparents and anyone over 60 years old is exempt from the payment cut.

Families with a child under one year old would get $1000 more each year and fortnightly family tax benefit part A payments would increase by about $10.

The bills also reduce the length of time people overseas can claim the aged pension from 26 weeks to six and cuts the pensioner education supplement.

The four-week wait for job seekers has been revised from the six month period first proposed by former prime minister Tony Abbott.

Before getting welfare payments, job seekers must tick off activities such as making a job plan and updating a resume.

Young people can access emergency relief funding if they find themselves in trouble.
