The jobless rate unexpectedly rose to 5.4 per cent in October, lessening the need for a further immediate rise in interest rates, new official data released today suggest.

Economists had expected the unemployment rate to fall to a seasonally adjusted 5.0 per cent after holding at 5.1 per cent in the previous two months.

The rise reflected a greater number people looking for work and officially becoming classified as unemployed.

The number of people joining the workforce in October rose by 29,700, slightly more than 20,000 predicted by economists.

Those in full-time employment dropped by 14,100, but the number of people in part-time employment grew by 43,800.
