Jobs for Victorian regions

Hundreds of Victorian public service jobs will be relocated to regional areas as part of a $631 million regional blueprint.

Some 400 jobs across various departments and agencies will be relocated to the key centres of Ballarat, Bendigo and Moe as the Victorian government moves to ease Melbourne's population explosion.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said the jobs were part of an ongoing decentralisation strategy.

No single agency would be relocated, and Mr Brumby said he could not release the details of which areas of the public service would be affected until unions had been consulted.

"There will be no forced job losses, all of this will be achieved through attrition and so if there's any public servant who wants to move, they'll be encouraged to move with what are generous packages," Mr Brumby told reporters in the central Victorian town of Maryborough.

"If they wish to stay in Melbourne and to continue in the public service, they'll be able to do that."

The $631 million regional five-year blueprint includes $110 million for universities and training facilities to encourage young people to study and stay outside Melbourne and $204 million for infrastructure, including water, green energy, transport and broadband services.

More than $150 million will be invested in community and cultural facilities, almost $100 million will go towards stimulating jobs growth and business development and $60 million will help plan for the expansion of regional centres.

"The package that I've announced today is the biggest single commitment that we've ever made to a regional blueprint," Mr Brumby said.
