An innovation and business start-up hub on the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site will be like nothing else in Australia, Premier Steven Marshall says.

The South Australian government's vision for the site, which was closed in September 2017, is to turn part into a hub with a "chief entrepreneur" to help attract start-ups in a range of fields including drone technology and digital currencies.

"This will be phenomenal. When we look at what happens in other states of Australia, they have got nothing like this consolidated precinct," Mr Marshall told reporters on Friday.

The premier said the uniqueness of the site would be its ability to house and bring people from different sectors together.

"I am so excited about the potential of this site to create jobs and also create interstate and overseas visitation," Mr Marshall said.

The premier said development plans were on track but ruled out using public funds to lure tech companies.

"We want to have parts of this site activated by the end of the financial year and another slab activated by the end of the year," Mr Marshall said.
