Joe Mennie shines as Redbacks bite Bulls

South Australia's Joe Mennie displayed the kind of form that earned a single Test cap in 2016 as his five-wicket haul helped trounce Queensland.

Career-best figures from Joe Mennie helped South Australia get their domestic one-day cup campaign back on track with an 83-run victory over Queensland in Brisbane on Sunday.

South Australia crashed to a seven-wicket defeat against the Cricket Australia XI on Wednesday - the development side's second win in three seasons - but rebounded in style thanks to both Mennie and a match-turning 115 not out from Tom Cooper.

The Redbacks recovered from a parlous 5-99 to post 8-240, as Cooper played a defiant lone-hand in a match in which only two batsman passed 25.

Mennie's nagging line and length at Allan Border Field paid rich dividends as Queensland's top-order all failed with the Bulls eventually dismissed for just 157 off 36.5 overs.

The fast-medium bowler was the Shield's leading wicket-taker in 2016, earning a single Test cap as a result, but he missed much of last season after suffering a nasty blow on the head while batting.

"The way he bowled was outstanding," Cooper said of Mennie.

"It was overcast all day but the pitch I thought was pretty good and I thought we were pretty short of par at halfway, so it was an all-round very good bowling performance.

"It was a very important win because obviously things didn't go to plan the other day, so to get one the board here gets us right back in the competition."

Queensland's innings initially mirrored that of South Australia's as the Bulls slipped to 6-94.

However, there was to be no saviour for the home side with only wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson defying the Redbacks with a breezy knock of 60.

Earlier, Queensland's young bowlers made an impact with medium-pacer Jack Wildermuth collecting career-best figures of 4-39, while debutant paceman Brendan Doggett returned 2-46.
