John Lennon jacket sold at auction in UK

The teal blue jacket belonging to John Lennon, which dates from the late 1960s, has been snapped up at action in England for STG7000 ($A12,300).

A fan has bought a rare jacket owned by Beatles star John Lennon at auction for STG7000 ($A12,300) as a birthday present for her husband.

The woman, who doesn't want to be named, says she is absolutely delighted with her purchase.

She says they'll add it to their extensive Beatles memorabilia collection.

The teal blue jacket, dating from the late 1960s, had been expected to fetch between STG8000 and STG12,000 when it went under the hammer.

The three-quarter length jacket, with statement of provenance, has a mandarin collar and a slight flare to the sleeves. It shows slight signs of wear, such as a small tear on the left sleeve.

Lennon left the Nehru-style jacket at his English home when he moved to America in 1971 and passed it on to friend Jo Jo Johns, who cleared out the star's house.

Johns was personal assistant to the Beatles and worked at the group's offices at 3 Savile Row in central London from 1968 to 1975.

In the early 1970s she gave the jacket to her friend, Anthony Goddard.

Lennon lived at Tittenhurst Park in Ascot, Berkshire, from 1969 until August 1971, when he set off for America, a journey from which he would never return.

Tittenhurst was the place where he penned his hit song Imagine in the famed White Room.

He also recorded his second solo album of the same title, and created two films at the beautiful Georgian manor house.

When he vacated the property, he left behind nearly all of his possessions for Johns to either discard or give away.

Goddard said the jacket was given to him as a birthday present in the early 1970.

"Jo Jo was a good friend and she had acquired a lot of abandoned belongings from the band members."
