Johnny Depp has mocked his Australian dog drama by apologising for "not smuggling" his pets into the UK for his press tour.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star and his wife Amber Heard were mocked in April for making a wooden public apology video to make amends to the Australian government after Heard failed to file the correct paperwork when she brought their dogs Pistol and Boo into Australia last year.

The actress pleaded guilty to one count of falsifying quarantine documents, while two charges of illegal importation of an animal were dropped. She escaped conviction and was ordered to pay a $US1000 ($A1359) fine.

Depp poked fun at the scandal at the London press conference for Alice Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to 2010's Alice in Wonderland, on Sunday by making a public statement.

"I'm going to do this everywhere I go," he said.

"I would really like to apologise for not smuggling my dogs into England because it would have been a bad thing to do because the Australians, though chipper, and you know ...."

He was cut off by producer Suzanne Todd who jokingly added the dogs came to England while he was filming the sequel.

"That's funny, I feel like Johnny's dogs were here, weren't they? Weren't they with you on set?"

Director Tim Burton, who serves as a producer on the upcoming Disney fantasy, added, "I forgot to tell you - they're dead, I just sat on them."

"I tried to kill them after Australia," Depp quipped.

As part of the Australian plea deal, Depp and Heard recorded the apology video, in which they praised the Australian government and their strict immigration laws.

Depp reprises his role as the Mad Hatter in the sequel, which is set for release in the US and UK on May 27.
