Johnson to return for Scorchers in BBL

Mitchell Johnson will return from being rested against the Sydney Sixers when Perth take on the Melbourne Renegades at Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.

Former Australia quick Mitchell Johnson will return to Perth's line-up for their Big Bash League clash against the Melbourne Renegades at Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.

Johnson has been recalled after being rested from the side's six-wicket loss to the Sydney Sixers on Tuesday, while allrounder Hilton Cartwright returns from the extended Australian Test squad.

However, it will be the reappearance of Johnson which will be of most concern to a Renegades top order with plenty to prove.

Johnson claimed 3-33 in the Scorchers' opening-round win over Adelaide and will be a looming figure to the likes of Aaron Finch and Callum Ferguson, who will be desperate to impress Australian selectors.

Finch top scored for the Renegades in their only game, against the Sydney Thunder last week, setting up the 49-run win with 63 off just 37 balls.

However, after he scored just a combined 22 runs in three one-dayers against New Zealand a month ago, Thursday's clash could be his second last chance to impress selectors before they announce their squad for the ODI series against Pakistan next month.

Ferguson too is pushing for an Australia recall - this time in the Test arena ahead of February's tour of India.

He failed to pass 25 in his six Sheffield Shield innings since being dropped following his debut in Hobart, and there are no four-day fixtures remaining between now and when the squad is named to tour India.

Instead, he'll have to rely on making a statement in the Twenty20s, after he struck 38 from 32 balls last week in the side's season-opener.

Perth's Shaun Marsh also has a case to push.

He returned from injury in his side's loss to the Sydney Sixers, scoring eight in his first match since the first Test against South Africa in November.

Marsh and the Scorchers will come up against the club's former cult-hero Brad Hogg for the first time.

The left-arm Chinaman bowler has again been selected in a 13-man Renegades squad, which also includes quick Cameron Stevenson who has been approved by the league as a replacement for Peter Siddle.

Siddle is eying a return from a back problem midway through the T20 tournament after he was injured in the first Test against South Africa in Perth.
