Joint approach to super possible: Labor

Labor frontbencher Jason Clare believes there could be a joint approach to superannuation tax concessions.

Labor frontbencher Jason Clare believes tackling overly generous superannuation tax concessions is the next opportunity for a bi-partisan approach after the deal done on the China free trade agreement.

He said everyone at the recent economic summit involving business, unions and community leaders agreed it was an area that should be reformed - and former treasurer Joe Hockey said as much in his farewell speech to parliament.

"Malcolm Turnbull has almost said it himself ... that has got to be the next area we can work together," Mr Clare told Sky News on Sunday.

Assistant Treasurer Kelly O'Dwyer says everything is on the table when it comes to the government's tax white paper process.

"It's a little bit ridiculous when you're looking at all the options to start cutting things out and taking things off the table," she told ABC television.

"You have to look at all of the options when you're coming up with a package."

Negative gearing also had to be looked at within the whole tax system, Ms O'Dwyer said.

While many believe only the wealthy take advantage of negative gearing, average income earners including nurses, policemen and women also benefit, she said.
