Jolie 'had to' cast daughter in Maleficent

Angelina Jolie says her five-year-old daughter Vivienne was cast in the film Maleficent because she was the only child not scared to approach her on set.

Angelina Jolie had no choice but to let her daughter Vivienne play the young Princess Aurora in the new movie Maleficent - because the five-year-old was the only child on set who wasn't terrified of the movie star's horned villainess.

The five-year-old was hanging out with mum on the set when children were being cast for the pivotal role - and only she had the nerve to approach Jolie in costume as a wicked queen.

"We think it's fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors," The Salt star told entertainment news website EW.com. "That's not our goal for Brad (Pitt) and I at all, but the other three- and four-year-olds wouldn't come near me.

"It had to be a child that liked me and wasn't afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws. So it had to be Viv."

*Maleficent releases in Australia on May 29.
