A lawyer for Jon Stevens says the Aussie rocker can now get on with his life after assault charges involving his ex-fiancee Jodhi Meares were dropped.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Nicole Arnold formally dropped the common assault and domestic-related assault charges in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday.

Prosecutors have also withdrawn an AVO application brought on behalf of Meares, a former model and swimsuit designer who shot to fame in 1999 when she married billionaire James Packer.

Stevens - real name John Stevenson - was not in court as he is overseas.

Solicitor Greg Goold said the charges had taken a personal and financial toll on the Noiseworks frontman, who has blamed it for the break-up of his engagement to Meares.

Stevens was charged in February with common assault by Rose Bay police after they were called to the couple's luxury Point Piper unit in the early hours.

"He's very happy that the matter's finished, that the charges have been dropped and he can now effectively get on with his life as a singer," Mr Goold told reporters outside court.

"The process has been extremely difficult for him because, notwithstanding that you're innocent until proven guilty, he's had to suffer.

"His engagement's been cancelled on the basis of allegation only, which he's found very difficult to deal with.

"And very costly for him as well."
