Journalism a 'wonderful business': PM

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has described journalism as a "wonderful, romantic business" at the book launch of a former newspaper editor.

Four decades after his stint as a state political reporter, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has spoken at NSW Parliament House about the troubled state of the news business.

At a book launch on Friday, Mr Turnbull described the newspaper industry as a "wonderful, romantic business".

"The frustrating thing for journalists and I see so many of you here today, the frustrating thing for you is that there are more people reading your copy than ever before," he said at the launch of Making Headlines by former editor-in-chief of The Australian, Chris Mitchell.

"You are reaching more eyeballs than ever before or ever could have been conceived possible and yet the revenue is not there in the way it was."

Mr Turnbull said there was a danger in the internet age of people limiting the type of news they receive.

"As we move into a world where narrowcasting is possible and this of course began with cable television, and the internet has absolutely supercharged that," he said.

"We run the risk that everybody in effect gets the news service that they want, that confirms their prejudices, confirms their disposition rather than challenging it to a balanced analysis."
