Bill Peach, best known as the presenter of the seminal ABC current affairs show This Day Tonight, has died at the age of 78.

Peach was presenter of TDT when it launched in 1967 and continued to host it for the next eight years. Peach, who was born in 1935 in the NSW Riverina town of Lockhart, started at the ABC in 1958, as a trainee. Before joining TDT, he had worked on Four Corners.

In 1975, he was awarded a Logie for Outstanding Contribution to Television in recognition of his eight years of service on TDT.

He went on to host a travel series, Peach's Australia, and founded a travel and tourism company, Bill Peach Journeys. In 1991 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the media and to tourism.

Peach had been suffering from cancer in recent months and died at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital early on Tuesday.

He is survived by his partner Pam and two children.
