Chad Collins has gone close to claiming just the 10th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history and third of the season.
Ultimately he settled for an 11-under 60 in the second round of the PGA Tour event in Alabama.
After six straight birdies on Grand National's rain-softened Lake course, the 38-year-old Indiana native missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th.
"... the putt was a little tricky. We couldn't quite figure out if it was kind of right centre, right edge or left centre, left edge.
"Just kind of lost a little bit of speed and broke off the left edge."
He then made par on the 18th after he hit his approach to the back fringe, leaving a 70-foot downhill birdie try that he hit five feet past.
Jim Furyk, who is in the depleted field this week, shot a record 58 last year in Connecticut and is one of eight players to shoot 59.
Justin Thomas, in Hawaii, and Adam Hadwin, in California, shot 59s in January.
Collins was at 15-under -- after his course-record equalling record -- to lead by four-strokes over Grayson Murray (64) and first-round co-leader Cameron Tringale (66).
Brian Gay (63) and David Hearn (65) are joint fourth at 10-under while New Zealander Steven Alker (67) sits six shots off the pace in a share of sixth.
Cameron Percy carded a 67 to be the highest-placed Australian at seven under, a shot better off than Robert Allenby (71) with Stuart Appleby at four under after a 67. Brett Drewiit made the cut at two under after a 68.
Furyk had a 68 to get to five under. The 47-year-old US Ryder Cup captain is playing the event after failing to qualify for the British Open.
Davis Love III, at 53 the oldest player in the field, followed his opening 72 with a 67 to sit at three under. His son Dru Love missed the cut, shooting rounds of 73 and 72.
