Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce has asked Labor to work with him on a bipartisan support package for dairy farmers grappling with savage cuts to the price of milk.

Caretaker provisions triggered by the election mean the federal minister cannot make policy announcements, but Mr Joyce says he is determined to help farmers.

"I ask my opposition counterpart to work quickly with me in a bipartisan way to finalise the support package," he said on Thursday after meeting with farmers in Gippsland.
