Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has offered Anthony Albanese some unsolicited advice about making a run for the Labor leadership.

He said the Labor frontbencher should have listened to former Labor prime minister Paul Keating and "have some ticker".

"If you are going to make a run for it Albo, now's the time to do it old boy, because otherwise you are out of the game," Mr Joyce told Sky New on Sunday.

Cabinet Secretary Arthur Sinodinos predicted Labor leader Bill Shorten would try and destabilise the new parliament, despite his statements to the contrary, because he had Mr Albanese "breathing down his neck".

"He's predicting an election within a year because he wants to keep his troops on their toes and locked in behind him," Senator Sinodinos told ABC TV.

"The longer this parliament goes the more likely it is that he will lose his job."
