Julie Bishop to lobby US on tariff plan

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will meet with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to raise Australia's concerns about proposed steel and aluminium tariffs.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says the resignation of US President Donald Trump's top economic adviser Gary Cohn "will be a loss to the White House".

Ms Bishop, in New York on Tuesday, said she is scheduling a meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to raise Australia's concerns about Mr Trump's plan to impose a global 25 per cent tariff on steel imports and 10 per cent on aluminium.

"I am scheduling a discussion with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson," Ms Bishop told reporters.

"I'll try and do it while I'm here in New York.

"We will be urging the United States to not proceed down this path."

Mr Cohn resigned on Tuesday after clashing with Mr Trump over the president's plan to introduce protectionist trade policies.

"I believe he will be a loss to the White House," Ms Bishop said.

"I don't know the circumstances of his resignation other than differences over policy.

"I believe we will be closer to his view in terms of benefits of open liberalised trade."
