Justify $50b debt increase: Milne

Christine Milne says instead of an artificial debt ceiling the government should be required to justify to parliament every $50 billion increase.

Australian Greens leader Christine Milne is calling for the government to report to parliament every time debt is increased by $50 billion, in return for her party's support in scrapping the debt ceiling.

Senator Milne is in negotiations with the government over a plan to axe the debt cap, rather than increase it to $500 billion, as originally proposed by the coalition.

Instead of having a ceiling - which Labor wants limited to $400 billion - the Greens want the government to make a detailed statement to parliament justifying any $50 billion increase.

"There would have to be a justification for increasing the debt every time a threshold of an additional $50 billion was crossed," Senator Milne told ABC radio on Wednesday.

"We want to make sure that every single dollar of government debt is justified and debated - more scrutiny, not less."
