English rugby league club Salford have launched an investigation into the events leading to former NRL winger Justin Carney being sent off in their 29-22 win over the Toronto Wolfpack in the Challenge Cup.

The Australian was dismissed by referee Jack Smith for reportedly using foul or abusive language in the immediate aftermath of League 1 (third division) Toronto's third try which put them 16-12 up after 26 minutes.

In the post-match press conference, coach of Super League's Salford Ian Watson declined to comment on why Carney was dismissed.

"I'm waiting to see the referee's report and (I'll) speak to the guys involved before I can comment," he said.

A statement issued by the Red Devils said: "The club will work closely with the RFL and all parties involved over the coming days to investigate the incident thoroughly.
