In Kane's absence, Manchester City's Raheem Sterling was named captain in what will be his 50th appearance for the national team.

Southgate selected an attacking trio of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Sterling while West Ham United's 20-year-old Declan Rice starts in midfield.

Netherland's manager Ronald Koeman in contrast picked two members of Liverpool's Champions League winning team with Virgil van Dijk in central defence and Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield.

Memphis Depay leads the line with Ryan Babel on the left and Steven Bergwijn on the right of the attack.
