Borce Ristevski, 53, is believed to have been attacked at the Melbourne Assessment Prison on Thursday afternoon.
A source told Fairfax Media the bashing was not severe, describing it a "welcome" for the new inmate.
A Corrections Victoria spokesman said a 53-year-old prisoner was treated for minor injuries.
"He did not require hospitalisation and was treated in the prison medical centre," the spokesman said.

A Victoria Police spokesman said police were investigating an assault on a prisoner.
Ristevski was charged with the murder of his wife, Karen, on Wednesday - almost 18 months since she went missing from their home in Avondale Heights.
Her remains were found in bushland in the Mount Macedon Regional Park in February.
Ristevski has denied any involvement in his wife's killing and his lawyer, Rob Stary, has said his client would plead not guilty.
He has been remanded in custody until 18 April.
