Victorian lawyer Kate Jenkins has been named the new federal sex discrimination commissioner.

Ms Jenkins was appointed the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner in 2013 after two decades as a lawyer.

She was lead partner of Herbert Smith Freehills' Australian equal opportunity practice.
