Queensland Education Minister Kate Jones denies the state government is yet to make a decision on funding for the Safe Schools program because of negative political implications.

Federal funding for the program runs out in October, and the Queensland Teachers Union has suggested the Labor government is avoiding filling the gap because of its perceived backlash.

The program aims to educate school children about sexual and gender diversity, but has been heavily criticised by some federal coalition MPs and conservative groups.

QTU president Kevin Bates said the union would continue to provide support and training for teachers but wanted the government to clarify what the funding arrangement would be going forward.

"Our concern is there have been significant negative comments in the community from federal politicians and from particular groups," Mr Bates said.

"That has made it very difficult for schools to embrace this very necessary program."

Ms Jones said the minority government was yet to make a final decision on whether to fund the program, but supported its staff training.

"I absolutely support the professional development of teachers through the Safe Schools program, and we are committed to that regardless of federal funding," she said on Friday.

"The federal government has committed to fund Safe Schools 'til October and we'll be sitting down to look at what that looks like post that funding running out."

The Queensland Greens accused the government of avoiding making a call on the funding until after the upcoming state election, due by May next year but tipped to be held by the end of 2017.

"By refusing to maintain Safe Schools funding, Queensland Labor have shown they lack the courage and commitment to school children shown by their southern colleagues in Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT," the party said in a statement.
