Federal independent MP Bob Katter is urging the government to step in and subsidise vaccines for the potentially deadly Q Fever.

Mr Katter says screening and vaccine for the disease which mostly affects those working with cattle and sheep costs between $150 and $400 per person - "extravagant" for farmers and small businesses already struggling in the current economic climate.

"The government must step in and cover the cost of vaccination because failure to vaccinate will be far more costly to the health system," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
