A backup dancer dressed as a shark in Katy Perry's Super Bowl halftime show has become an internet sensation after his missteps, flopping fins and general awkwardness won fans the world over.

Left Shark, as he is known, danced behind Perry as she performed her hit song "Teenage Dream" at Monday's event.

Fans soon began tweeting that left shark seemed a little out of step with both Perry and right shark, who had clearly learned the moves ahead of time.
But as left shark's blunders went on, his fan base grew and the Twittersphere was soon flooded with memes (see our collection of the best below).
Since the performance, dancer Bryan Gaw has come forward to identify himself as left shark, posting on Instagram that "the rumours are true" beneath a photo of Perry and the sharks.

Meanwhile, dancer Scott Myrick identified himself as right shark, tweeting: "LIFE GOAL ACCOMPLISHED".
