A search is underway for a missing kayaker in a river system in Western Australia's South West region.

The woman, who was kayaking in the Blackwood River, 5.5km west of Bridgetown, was reported missing at 11.15am on Sunday, police say.

A marine search and rescue operation is underway to locate the woman, with Water Police, State Emergency Service volunteers and local police scouring riverbanks and waterways in the area.

Recent heavy rainfall has prompted flood warnings for the Blackwood River, with the water running faster and higher than usual.

The river peaked at 3.4m in Bridgetown on Saturday night and is expected to continue to rise rapidly near Nannup, 30km downstream, with minor flood levels predicted.
