A couple from Kazakhstan has been charged for allegedly defrauding a Sydney casino of more than $1 million.
New South Wales police said a 36-year-old woman and a 44-year old man had travelled to Sydney from Kazakhstan in October, and that same day applied for memberships to a casino in Barangaroo, in Sydney's CBD.
Police were tipped off about the couple after casino staff allegedly noticed the woman wearing a small camera fixed to her shirt last Thursday.
The husband-and-wife pair was arrested at the casino, where police said they found a mobile phone with a fitted attachment that allowed the camera function of the phone to discreetly view, capture or record images, as well as a small custom-made mirror attachment for the mobile phone.
Police allege over the course of October and November the pair made multiple visits to the casino, winning a total of $1,179,412.50.
Police say with their mobile phones capturing images of the table, the pair communicated using deep seated earpieces through which they received instruction to wager on various card games and ultimately cheat the casino.
A search warrant was carried also out at their accommodation on Kent Street in Sydney, where police said they located other gambling props, high-end jewellery, and 2,000 euros ($3,500).
The couple were each charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and faced a court hearing on Friday, where bail was refused.
