Former prime minister Paul Keating will launch an Aboriginal art festival in Adelaide.

The Tarnanthi festival, featuring more than 450 Aboriginal artists at 22 venues, will be launched at the Art Gallery of South Australia on Thursday night.

The exhibitions - including painting, photography, jewellery, textiles, photography, printmaking and sculpture - give a voice to important Australian stories, artistic director Nici Cumpston says.

SA Premier Jay Weatherill says he wants to make the state an international hub for Aboriginal visual art.
