Ken Wyatt, the first Indigenous person to be elected to the House of Representatives, says he's experienced racist hate mail since the election.

The Liberal MP declared victory in the West Australian seat of Hasluck.

"I've had that all my life, growing up as an Aboriginal in the '60s, the '70s and the '80s," he said.

"What disappoints me is the work that's been done by Reconciliation Australia, we've certainly moved forward and I've walked with so many great Australians."

Despite the racist remarks, the indigenous health expert said it was a historic result.

"In 50 years' time historians and people will be analysing why Hasluck chose an indigenous candidate, and what they'll discover is that they didn't choose an indigenous candidate because I was indigenous," he told reporters on Sunday.

"They chose a person who they believe would represent the interests of everybody within Hasluck.

"They chose someone who had the skills in education, health and the bureaucracy and understood the system. Who will speak fiercely. Who will stand up and deliver."
