Kenyan road crash leaves 30 dead

A collision between a bus and a truck in western Kenya has left 30 people dead.

Thirty people have been confirmed killed in a collision between a bus and a truck in western Kenya.

According to Rift Valley regional coordinator Wanyama Musiba the bus was heading from the border town of Busia to the capital, Nairobi, when it collided with the truck near the town of Nakuru on Sunday.

"The bus, which was going downhill, probably had a brake failure, or either it was overspeeding or the driver was tired, those are the possibilities we are looking at.

"But, as you can see, the bus was being driven on the wrong side of the road," Wanyama told journalists at the scene.

"18 people in critical condition rushed to Molo and Nakuru hospitals by @Ems_Kenya following an accident at Migaa," tweeted the Kenyan Red Cross. "Others still trapped inside the bus," it added.

The dead included 28 bus passengers. Witness Benson Gachwe told DPA that number included five children.

The other two dead were in the truck.
