Kenya’s 50th anniversary highlights a different trend

Kenyan citizens have adopted opposing hashtags on Twitter to either celebrate or lament their country's 50th anniversary of independence.

Kenyans have taken to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction with widespread corruption and poverty as their nation celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence.

The hashtag #Kenyaat50 began as a way for Kenyan citizens to share their thoughts on the anniversary, with thousands of people tweeting positive messages about the country’s future.

However, the opposing hashtag #sickat50, initially used as a reference to the current medical strike in Kenya, has been adopted by many in opposition to the positive sentiments.

Thousands of #sickat50 tweets have lamented the lack of healthcare in Kenya and questioned whether there is anything to celebrate.
