Kerr, Matildas win big at sport awards

Sam Kerr and her Matildas team have carried off the major honours at the Women in Sport awards in Sydney.

Rising soccer star Sam Kerr and her Matildas team have won the major awards at the Women's Health Women in Sport awards in Sydney on Wednesday night.

Exciting attacker Kerr, who made the initial long list for FIFA Women's player of the Year, scored some spectacular goals for the Matildas and was an integral part of their success in 2017.

She beat a field of four world champions in track and field athlete Sally Pearson, mogul skier Britt Cox, high diver Rhiannan Iffland, para-athlete Isis Holt and 2016 Olympic 4x100m freestyle relay gold medal-winning swimmer Emma McKeon.

Cox picked up the Australian federal government award for outstanding woman in sport.

The Matildas won the A-Team award, following a strong mid-year effort in which they won the prestigious Tournament of Nations and a home series against Brazil.

They beat the Australia Stingers water polo team and three domestic national title winning teams in Sunshine Coast Lightning (Super Netball), Sydney Sixers (WBBL) and Adelaide Crows (AFLW).

"Australia's elite female footballers showed they are scoring spectacular goals on and off the field by dominating the awards," Women Sport Australia president Carol Fox said.

Australian rules also enjoyed a successful night.

The Moment of the Year award went to the inaugural AFLW game between Carlton and Collingwood, while Daisy Pearce was named Leadership Legend.

Dr Susan Alberti, so closely associated with the Western Bulldogs, was named a Person of Sporting influence.

Olympic sprint legend Betty Cuthert was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
