Refugee footballer Hakeem al-Araibi, 25, travelled to Bangkok for his honeymoon with his wife where he was arrested and threatened with deportation to Bahrain.

KEY DATES IN HAKEEM AL-ARAIBI'S DETENTION DRAMA:

February 12 - al-Araibi arrives in Melbourne

February 11 - Bahrain's foreign ministry says the 10-year jail sentence remains in place and reaffirms its right to "pursue all necessary legal actions against him"

February 11 - al-Araibi released from prison in Bangkok and gets on a plane home

February 10 - Phone call between Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa and the Thai Prime Minister, according to Bahrain state media

February 4 - al-Araibi appears before court; hearing date set for April 22; pressure mounts on Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to use his executive powers to free al-Araibi

February 1 - Bahrain's extradition request referred to Thai Criminal Court

January 29 - Bahrain applies to extradite al-Araibi

January 28 - Foster travels to Geneva to lobby FIFA

January 22 - international campaign to free al-Araibi spearheaded by former Socceroo captain Craig Foster; support from FIFA, IOC and FFA and human rights' groups

January 10, 2019 - Foreign Minister Marise Payne in Thailand for talks raises the issue with the government

November 27 - al-Araibi arrested after he arrives in Bangkok with his wife on a belated honeymoon

November 7, 2018 - Bahrain issues Interpol Red Notice for al-Araibi's arrest

2017 - becomes a permanent Australian resident, plays soccer for Melbourne club Pascoe Vale

2014 - flees to Australia from Qatar after travelling there as a member of the Bahrain national soccer team for a game. Gains refugee status; convicted in in absentia Bahrain and sentenced to 10 years' jail.

2012 - al-Araibi accused of vandalising a police station during protests in Bahrain; he denies the charge and says he was playing in a televised soccer game when the incident occurred. Says he was tortured after his arrest before being released on bail.
