Key points in the 2017/18 ACT budget

The 2017/18 ACT budget predicts an $83.4 million deficit with a return to surplus in the following financial year.

ACT BUDGET AT A GLANCE

* $83.4 million deficit in 2017/18

* Projected return to surplus on track for 2018/19

* $5.6 billion total expenditure

* 3.25 per cent state final demand in 2017/18

* 2.75 per cent gross state product in 2017/18

* 1.5 per cent forecast employment growth

MEASURES INCLUDED IN THE 2017/18 BUDGET

* $1.6 billion for health

* $1.2 billion for education

* $867.5 million new infrastructure and capital works spending over four years

* $236 million for major surgical, radiology and emergency centre

* $117.7 million investment in new nurse walk-in clinics, mental health package, commissioning new public hospital

* $70 million to expand women's and children's hospital

* Two new mobile dental health clinics

* Free health checks for all Year 7 students

* $100 million upgrades to schools

* $24 million to expand schools in Gungahlin

* $53.5 million in capital for light rail stage 2 planning to Woden and capital

* More firefighters and police

* Two new rapid bus routes with two months' free travel to encourage take-up

* Container deposit scheme introduced

* Continue funding for Safe Schools program

* $25 million expansion of Mugga Lane tip

* Build permanent court for the Canberra Capitals women's basketball team

* $2.5 million bakery at the Alexander Maconochie jail to employ inmates
