Kickert, Maric join Boomers Rio squad

NBL players Daniel Kickert and Aleks Maric have been added to the Boomers squad for the final Olympic selection camp in Melbourne.

Daniel Kickert and Aleks Maric have been recalled into the Australian men's basketball team for the final Olympic selection camp before Rio.

NBL forward Kickert, who has signed with the Brisbane Bullets for next season, and new Sydney Kings centre recruit Maric have been added to the squad in the absence of NBA stars Dante Exum and Andrew Bogut.

Exum ruled himself out last month to concentrate on his recovery from a torn ACL ahead of the new NBA season.

Bogut remains in doubt as he begins rehabilitation on a knee injury suffered during Golden State's playoff series.

Kickert was part of the Boomers team at the 2006 world championships, while Maric competed at the 2010 world championships and London Olympics.

"Both are quality players and quality people who will each bring a different set of skills for the coaching staff to consider in terms of the overall mix of the team," coach Andrej Lemanis said.

"Being in a position to bring in players of their quality at this point is another illustration of the depth of talent we currently have in this country."

The Boomers will gather in Melbourne from July 5 for a week of training, before playing two games at Hisense Arena against an all-star US college team.

Lemanis will name his final team for Rio on July 11.

"The camp and games at Hisense Arena form a critical part of our preparation for Rio," said Lemanis.

"We will continue to build on our offensive and defensive structures from previous years. We will also invest a lot of time off the court ensuring that, as a team, we put ourselves in the best position to deal with the challenges that lay ahead."
