Kidnapped son of Pakistan's ex-PM released

The kidnapped son of Pakistan's former prime minister has been freed three years after gunmen abducted him, officials say.

A son of Pakistan's former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani kidnapped three years ago has been recovered from Afghanistan in an operation by US and Afghan forces, officials say.

Ali Haider Gilani was abducted from the family's home town of Multan in eastern Pakistan by Taliban gunmen on May 9, 2013 during an election rally.

Gilani was Pakistan's prime minister between 2008 and 2012.

"The Afghan National Security Adviser Hanif Atmar in a telephone call to the adviser to the prime minister on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz informed that Ali has been recovered today," the ministry said in a statement.

The recovery came in a joint operation carried out by Afghan and US security forces in the Afghan province of Ghazni.
