Killer tells police 'where Prue is buried'

Notorious child killer Leslie Camilleri says he buried the body of Melbourne schoolgirl Prue Bird at a suburban tip, but police say it can't be there.

It's been revealed the Bega schoolgirl killer contacted police in May and told them he wrapped Prue's body in a doona and hid it in a wardrobe at a Frankston tip in 1992.

Camilleri, 43, had previously refused repeated requests from a judge to disclose where he buried the 13-year-old's remains, despite a heartfelt plea from the girl's mother.

Detective Senior Constable Nathan Toey told the Victorian Supreme Court that police gave Camilleri maps and took him to examine a site in Frankston last month.

But the location Camilleri gave them was inconsistent with the layout of the site, Det Sen Const Toey said.

"He couldn't have put it there," he told the court on Monday.

Det Sen Const Toey said the area identified by Camilleri was at the time used to store sand and gravel, and not to dump rubbish.

Camilleri told police he had the remains of another person in his car when he murdered Prue, and disposed of both bodies at the same tip, Det Sen Const Toey said.

Camilleri claimed he stopped his car near the site and made it look like it he had broken down, before cutting a hole in the fence and dumping the remains.

Defence barrister John Kelly said Camilleri was living in NSW at the time and was not familiar with the area.

Mr Kelly said Camilleri had been taking amphetamines for several days before the murder, and could not be specific or precise about the location of the body.

Prosecutor Michele Williams SC said it remained to be seen whether Camilleri was trying to be helpful, as the site had been used as a tip in the past.

"There are other discrepancies but the simple fact is he says it's a tip and there's a tip," she said.

Camilleri pleaded guilty last year to murdering Prue, more than 20 years after she disappeared from her Glenroy home.

Justice Elizabeth Curtain delayed Camilleri's sentencing, which was due to occur this week, so police could take more statements and possibly dig up the tip.

"There would be enough there to warrant a pretty thorough investigation and if necessary an excavation," Justice Curtain said.

Camilleri will be given more maps of the area and police will get statements from staff at the tip before the case returns to court on October 16.

Camilleri is already serving two life sentences for the murder of Bega schoolgirls Lauren Barry and Nichole Collins in 1997.

He has previously claimed that he disposed of Prue's remains in a fridge at a scrap metal yard in the Frankston area, but prosecutors rejected the idea after an investigation.

A search has also been conducted in the area around Fiddlers Green, near the NSW-Victoria border, close to where the bodies of the Bega schoolgirls were found.
