King tide breaches Torres Strait sea walls

Islands in the Torres Strait have experienced extensive flooding, caused by a king tide.

As often occurs, the tide has breached sea walls.

The federal government has approved $5 million to repair sea walls in the Torres Strait, after funding by the previous Labor government fell through.

However these repairs are yet to take place.

Plumber, Steve Gurney is on Saibai island assisting with clean-up efforts.

He told Naomi Selvaratnam while there has been minimal damage to property, the tide has left a huge mess for islanders.
