Early season NBL pacesetter Sydney Kings plan to beef up their point guard stocks after releasing import shooting guard Michael Bryson.
The Kings have won three straight after losing their first match but Bryson had struggled offensively and was getting limited minutes off the bench.
He pulled off some big defensive plays but averaged fewer than two points a game and accrued more fouls than points across the four matches he played.
Sydney managing director Jeff van Groningen said he had a replacement in mind but that player wouldn't arrive in Australia in time for Monday's home clash with Illawarra, which Sydney will enter with just two imports.
He felt the Kings would have a better balance by finding back-up to point guards Kevin Lisch and Jason Cadee, rather than go for another off guard.
Van Groningen said Bryson was unfortunate in that he might have been given more time had a mooted deal for an Australian point guard not fallen over.
"In the absence of that person coming in and playing that point guard position we felt we needed some additional skill sets in that ball handling position at that one spot," van Groningen told AAP,
"If Jason Cadee or Lisch were under pressure, whether it be injury, or anything that might keep them out, or foul trouble in a game, we felt at the moment we are probably weakest behind those two.
"We don't have anything behind those two."
Van Groningen wouldn't put a time frame on the return of injured centre Julian Khazzouh, who hasn't played for 10 months because of a quadriceps injury,
However, he was adamant the valued big man was making progress.
"He has been doing some work with the team at the stat of the practices and he's been finishing his recovery next to the court with some other personalised drills," van Groningen said.
He felt they had adequate big-man cover in the Boomers Alecks Maric and recent import recruit and two-time LA Lakers NBA Championship winner Josh Powell.
