Kingston Heath, Victoria GC host Aust Open

The men's Australian Open golf championship will return to Melbourne's Sandbelt for the first time in 18 years at Kingston Heath in 2020.

Kingston Heath will be the host when the flagship Australian Open golf championship returns to Melbourne's famed Sandbelt after an 18-year absence.

Golf Australia says highly-rated courses Kingston Heath (2020) and Victoria GC (2022) were selected amid wide interest from Melbourne clubs to fill "release years" in the Australian Open's current eight-year contract with Sydney.

Kingston Heath GC will host its eighth Australian Open, while Victoria GC will host its fourth.

The Open has been played in Sydney for the last 12 years under a deal with the NSW government.

It was last staged in Victoria at Moonah Links on the Mornington Peninsula in 2005 and last held in Melbourne at Victoria GC in 2002.

Victoria GC captain Tony Killen said the 2022 Open would have extra significance because of the club's strong connection with five-times British Open champion Peter Thomson, who died last month.

"We are especially honoured because 2022 will mark the 50th anniversary of the final Australian Open win of VGC life member and golfing icon, the late Peter Thomson," said Killen.

This year's Australian Open will be played at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney from November 15-18.

The Australian Golf Club, also in Sydney, will host the 2019, 2021 and 2023 editions.
