Kirsten quits as Hurricanes BBL coach

Adam Griffith will take over as coach of the Hobart Hurricanes after Gary Kirsten stepped down halfway through a two-year deal.

Former South African batsman Gary Kirsten has stepped down as Hobart Hurricanes head coach a year into the job, handing the reins to Adam Griffith.

Kirsten guided the Hurricanes to the Big Bash League final last season but has chosen not to see out the second year of his contract for "personal reasons".

"It is an unfortunate circumstance as I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the club," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Griffith took the Tasmanian Tigers from Sheffield Shield wooden spooners to finalists in 2017/18 - his first season in the role - and will now coach the state in all three formats.

"It's a big honour - even if a somewhat surprising one," he said of the new appointment.

"It was brilliant working with Gary last season and I certainly took a wealth of knowledge away with me from his time at the Hurricanes - like his tactical thinking and coaching drills.

"Now that I'm head coaching the bulk of both male squads year-round in Hobart, we can really grow some effective long-term plans."

Cricket Tasmania chief executive Nick Cummins said he was disappointed to see Kirsten leave.

"We're working with Gary to see if he can come to Hobart this summer so our fans can give him a proper send off," he said.
