New Zealand editor John Gilbert has continued Hacksaw Ridge's strong showing at the Academy Awards with a win for editing.

It followed a win by Australian sound mixers Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace and American Kevin O'Connell for their work on the war film.

La La Land was expected to dominate the ceremony, but Hacksaw Ridge has taken two early awards the musical was the favourite to win.
