Kiwi keen to turn jeers into cheers at SCG

Hard-hitting batsman Colin Munro will take centre stage during the Big Bash League derby between Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder.

Sydney Sixers signing Colin Munro wants to make the SCG faithful marvel instead of mock in Saturday's Big Bash League derby, his second outing at the ground.

Munro's previous visit to Sydney didn't exactly go to plan.

The New Zealand slugger dropped a catch late in Steve Smith's epic one-day knock of 164 then broke a bat as New Zealand suffered a 68-run loss.

Munro returns to the SCG at the pointy end of the BBL season as the Sixers' replacement for Sam Billings.

The equation for Munro's new side is simple: defeat cross-town rivals Sydney Thunder and they'll secure a berth in the finals.

The equation for Munro on BBL debut is even simpler: bat exactly the same way he did during a recent 52-ball ton, scored in a Twenty20 clash between NZ and Bangladesh.

"I'm always in touch with Brendon McCullum, obviously he was my skipper when I first moved into the New Zealand team," Munro said on Friday.

"He just said 'come out and play your way, you know if you do come off you can take a game away'.

"T20 cricket is so hit or miss .. that series (against Bangladesh) I got a duck, hundred, duck."

Munro, recently released by Indian Premier League club Kolkata, revealed he only received the BBL call-up after the Sixers' first choice Martin Guptill tweaked his hamstring.

The 29-year-old is thrilled to have a chance to impress in one of the world's most high-profile T20 competitions. The prospect of a sold-out home crowd of more than 40,000 is also exciting.

"It's going to be massive .. 80,000 people in there (Moore Park) watching either the soccer or cricket derbies," he said.

"Hopefully people see me as a Sydney Sixer, not a Kiwi.

"It was interesting (during the ODI in December). Some good chat and not-so-good chat, probably not too much stuff I can say here.

"Hopefully some of them can get behind me this time."

The Thunder's title defence all but ended when they dropped the opening four games of the season, although back-to-back wins mean they have the faintest of pulses.

"(Crowd of) 40,000, so it's a big day for Sydney and a bigger day for the Sydney Thunder. It's a must-win clash for us," Thunder spinner Chris Green said.

"All of the pressure is on them. They're the home side, we can go out there with nothing to lose and really enjoy ourselves, continue our winning streak of two.

"Anyone can beat anyone at this stage ... it's a really close competition."

The BBL cellar dwellers have added rookie Liam Hatcher to a 13-man squad in place of gun paceman Pat Cummins, who will be on national duty during Australia's ODI series against Pakistan.
